Techno is not a way to describe all electronic music, but it’s one of the genres that's been around the longest. The word "techno" originates from Germany but the term derives from the word technology and was developed in Detroit, Michigan in the 1980s.

The stylistic attributes of Techno are its repetitive 4x4 rhythms mostly created on drum machines. It was established as the name for this genre because of its electronic dance music style. It is characterized by a repetitive beat that is generally produced for use in a continuous DJ set. While the tempo typically varies between 120 and 150 beats per minute (bpm). Artists may use electronic instruments such as drum machines, sequencers, and synthesizers, as well as digital audio workstations.

Techno got its start in Detroit, where DJs loved the sounds of Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and Giorgio Moroder, but wanted to inject some soul into the deep digital sounds. Detroit's techno scene grew steadily with the likes of Juan Atkins and Derrick May helping nurture the foundation, and once Europe got a hold of the sound, it exploded, spawning a number of different scenes worldwide, with everyone from U2 to Madonna using the long-loved style in their own work. Today, you can find artists like Richie Hawtin and Nicole Moudaber still crafting proper techno productions.

Techno grew in popularity in the UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. In Europe regional variants quickly evolved and as time went on it was categorized into sub-genres such as acid, hardcore, ambient, and dub techno had developed. Music journalists and fans of techno are generally selective in their use of the term, so a clear distinction can be made between something related but often qualitatively different styles.

When talking about techno music, you can’t help but mention one of its founding artists such as Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Victor Calderone, who were well known during their time.
